Rancho Sienna Elementary School embraces Hill Country look

When it opens next August, Rancho Sienna Elementary School will look true to its Hill Country roots, with a rugged limestone exterior, a welcoming canopy, metal siding, and a pitched standing-seam metal roof.

That’s all by design. The Liberty Hill Independent School District and its architects, Huckabee, worked carefully to draw on the architectural past and present of the surrounding Hill Country when they created the design for Rancho Sienna Elementary.

They didn’t even have to look far, finding some of their inspiration right in Rancho Sienna, especially at the Sienna House community center. The architects echoed elements of the large, inviting covered porch patio at The Sienna House, as well as the traditional galvanized metal used for the cistern and other features.

Other sources of inspiration included Liberty Hill High School, opened in 2015, and the striking Zoot Pet Hospital, located on Highway 29 in Liberty Hill.

The school was also placed thoughtfully on its site along Via de Siena Boulevard, in the heart of Rancho Sienna. Designed for 800 students, Rancho Sienna Elementary faces the community’s main thoroughfare, with parent drop-off areas, bus unloading zones and parking all located on side streets, to minimize traffic impact and to showcase the school’s architecture and landscaping.

Newland, the developer of Rancho Sienna, has opened a new park across from the school on Via de Sienna Boulevard to serve as an outdoor classroom and as an additional pick-up and drop-off point for students and parents.

This park, Overlook Park, is designed to showcase the solar system, with a scale model of the planets, a glow-in-the-dark sidewalk, and a large observation platform for school lessons and stargazing activities.
