Dark skies at Rancho Sienna - a great place to see Top Sky Events for 2017
With its “dark skies” policy and a park created especially for stargazing, Rancho Sienna is the perfect place to enjoying National Geographic’s “Top 7 Must-See Sky Events for 2017.”
These events take place throughout the year, culminating with the Geminid meteor shower in December.
The Hill Country is one of the best places in Texas to view the skies, and Rancho Sienna is an especially inviting place, thanks to its dark skies policy. This means that downcast streetlights have been placed only at select street intersections in the community.
While Rancho Sienna residents can enjoy the Hill Country skies from any vantage point, the community has a park created especially to help neighbors of all ages enjoy the night sky. Overlook Park has a raised viewing platform with brackets for placing telescopes, with a glow-in-the-dark sidewalk lighting the way.
During the day, Overlook Park is designed as an outdoor classroom for Rancho Sienna Elementary School, located right across the street and planned to open in August 2017. The park includes a model of the solar system with fascinating facts embedded in the pavement, along with gathering and work spaces for students.
