Georgetown runs on 100% renewable energy – that’s a great fit with Rancho Sienna’s commitment to sustainability
As a community with our own commitment to green building and sustainable development, Rancho Sienna is proud to be part of Georgetown, a city that’s grabbing international headlines for its 100% renewable energy use.
This summer, Georgetown became officially powered with 100 percent renewable solar- and wind-generated energy, when it began receiving electricity from the Buckthorn solar plant in West Texas. This 154-megawatt solar farm provides power for Georgetown’s city utility system, making Georgetown one of the largest cities in the United States to use 100 percent renewable energy.
“Buckthorn represents more than just energy. It represents a defining moment in history when renewable energy became officially competitive with fossil fuels on the cost of energy,” said Georgetown Mayor Dale Ross, at a ribbon-cutting event at the Buckthorn facility.
The 1,250-acre Buckthorn solar plant has 1.7 million solar panels, which rotate over the course of the day to maintain a 90-degree angle to the sun, for maximum output. The plant is located near Fort Stockton, in Pecos County, which has Texas’ second-highest radiance factor, a rating for available sunlight.
Living green is a way of life at Rancho Sienna, where our commitment to sustainable development includes water conservation, native landscaping, tree preservation, a solar charging bench and an electric car charging station.
