Liberty Hill High School wins 2nd straight Breazeale Cup for its well-rounded athletics program

Success in everything from girls’ soccer to boys’ football helped Liberty Hill High School win the Austin American-Statesman’s prestigious George Breazeale Cup for the second year in a row in 2018.

Named for the Statesman’s late sports writer, who was legendary for his dedication to covering high school sports over five decades, the Breazeale Cup recognizes the most successful high school athletic programs in the newspaper’s coverage area. This includes high schools in Travis, Burnet, Williamson, Has and Bastrop counties, plus a few more bordering counties.

With 105 total points, Liberty Hill High School won the Breazeale Cup by a wide margin, easily besting the second-place finisher, Westlake, which had 80 points. Liberty Hill also sailed past its score of 85 points in 2017, when it also nabbed the Breazeale Cup.

“The defending Breazeale Cup champion enjoyed another spectacular season, especially in the traditional team sports,” the Statesman wrote. “The Class 4A Panthers won at least one playoff game in each team sport and had teams reach at least one regional tournament in five of those sports. Liberty Hill’s soccer teams combined for 28 points.”

To determine the winner of the Breazeale Cup, the Statesman uses a formula similar to the one that the University Interscholastic League uses to select the Lone Star Cup winners, with the exception that the Breazeale Cup does not factor in extracurricular activities beyond athletics.

Points are awarded for each sport, based on a team’s finish in district, regional and state tournaments, as well as its postseason results.

Liberty Hill High School’s scores for each sport were: Girls soccer, 15; volleyball, 13; boys soccer, 13; girls basketball, 11; boys basketball, 11; football, 8; softball, 6; boys cross country, 6; girls cross country, 6, boys golf 2, girls golf 6, tennis 4; baseball, 4.

Congrats to all of the student athletes, coaches, faculty members and dedicated parents who helped Liberty Hill High School win this prestigious award for the second consecutive year!
