Trendmaker offers hidden rooms for added storage and security
Trendmaker is offering several new homes with hidden rooms in Rancho Sienna. We don’t know how many homes in Austin have hidden rooms. After all, they’re secret. But we do know that hidden rooms date as far back as the 16th century, when wealthy Europeans used them to store wine and valuables, and to hide people during times of unrest.
Today, hidden rooms can provide useful storage spaces for valuables, and can also serve as panic rooms for security reasons.
They can be a homeowner’s private haven, providing a quiet space for study or meditation. A secret space can also make a great conversation-starter at parties. Ditto for open houses, should you ever decide to sell.
When choosing a new home with a hidden room, the builder typically conceals the secret space behind a hinged built-in bookcase, which functions as the door. Most hidden rooms are usually located on the second floor, although Trendmaker offers hidden rooms on both the first and second floors in Rancho Sienna.
It’s also fairly easy to create your own hidden room in an existing home. An extra walk-in closet, pantry or an unused space under a stairway can be converted into a secret room without creating any disruption. A built-in bookcase can not only serve as the door, but can also provide additional storage and display space on the un-hidden side. For an easy and creative solution, use a large antique armoire or other piece of furniture as the “doorway” – just remove the back.
