Today’s kitchens offer islands of calm and togetherness
Everyone loves a big kitchen island, and one of the newest and most exciting trends in kitchen design is the “combination island.” This type of island goes beyond the traditional breakfast bar to create a large secondary casual dining space.
Chesmar’s Owen model home in Rancho Sienna has a perfect example of how today’s kitchen islands have evolved into casual eating spaces.
Featuring a wedge shape that combines efficient curves and crisp straight lines, this island can easily accommodate four or more comfortable counter-height chairs. The solid-surface countertop has a deep overhang, providing plenty of knee-space.
On the family room side, the island’s curved knee-wall has the same paint and texture as the walls, creating a seamless and complementary look. On the kitchen side, the island incorporates a farmhouse sink, a dishwasher and cabinet space for efficient functionality.
This island is the perfect focal point for the cozy “farmhouse chic” décor of the Owen. Details such as pendant lighting, an arched brick accent wall, glass-front cabinetry, and a patterned tile backsplash complete this beautiful kitchen.
For larger or more formal occasions, the kitchen is open to the dining area. It’s also completely open to the family room, creating one large family gathering area.
“With the combination island, the space is very informal and open, and a wonderful way for families to still be gathered together even if everyone is doing something different, whether it be homework, cooking dinner, or eating,” says interior designer Marc Thee, in a Builder magazine article on the latest home design trends.
