Austin performed particularly well in the job market category, ranking No. 6 nationwide.
Nationwide, Austin ranks 39th in affordability, 13th in safety, and 22nd for both culture and market tightness.
Affordability was weighted at 30% in the study, with safety, market tightness and job market quality all at 20% each. Culture was weighted at 10%.
Austin fared much better than other major Texas metro areas as a haven for first-time homebuyers. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex ranks No. 34 overall, with Houston at No. 39 and San Antonio at No. 40.
