Meet our parks: the sky’s the limit at Rancho Sienna’s Overlook Park
Rancho Sienna’s Overlook Park is the perfect place to look up at the stars glowing in the Hill Country sky over Rancho Sienna. It is one of Rancho Sienna’s smaller parks, but it’s not hard to find – just look for the glowing sidewalk along Via de Sienna Boulevard.
The park’s location, across the street from Rancho Sienna Elementary School, part of the highly regarded Liberty Hill Independent School District, inspired Newland Communities to create a unique amenity that would encourage residents of all ages to learn more the stars and planets that twinkle in the night sky.
In the daytime, Overlook Park is designed to provide an outdoor classroom for teachers and students at the new elementary school.
The overlook platform rises eight feet above the street level, offering a commanding view and plenty of space to gather and learn. Benches built into the platform’s circular wall provide seating, and tables at street level offer places for students to pursue their studies.
The winding sidewalk leading up to the platform has plenty of fascinating planetary facts to spark questions and discussions. The sidewalk creates a scale model of our solar system, with a medallion representing the sun in the middle of the overlook platform. Other medallions represent the planets, with their relative size and distance from the sun approximating the solar system.
Each medallion has at least one interesting fact, such as this one: 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, but 99 percent of that water is either frozen or too salty to drink.
Landscaped with native plants and mature preserved oak trees, the park also provides a convenient drop-off and pick-up for students when the school opens.
With its glow-in-the-dark sidewalk, Overlook Park is one of Rancho Sienna’s most popular nighttime attractions. The special sunlight-absorbing surface guides after-dark visitors back up to the overlook platform, which offers plenty of places to set up telescopes.
Overlook Park is part of 100+ acres of parks, trails, recreational amenities, and natural open space at Rancho Sienna. Learn more.
